Metro Ethernet is the industry name for Fiber-Optic Ethernet transport service. Metro Ethernet designates a service that transports data traffic between two (2) or more customer Ethernet Local Area Networks (LANs) and that is compliant with IEEE 802.111 standards for Ethernet framing. Metro Ethernet can be configured as a fully meshed network, or as a point-to-multipoint service, or as a point-to-point connections.

Metro Ethernet typically is available as a Switched (Shared) or Dedicated service. Switched service supports traffic between multiple locations in many-to-one or any-to-any configuration. Switched Metro Ethernet offers two (2) different Class of Service (COS) levels, Basic or Premium. These classes of service support different features and QoS functionality.

Basic Serive: Basic is the "best effort" data transport Ethernet service offered at 10, 100, 1000 Mbps. Available in wide mileage bands for electrical or optical interfaces. Basic operates as a transparent LAN service that bridges customer traffic across the core network using Ethernet MAC addressing schemes. Metro Ethernet Basic simply extends your LAN capability across the metro to a remote office on the "other side of town".

Premium Service: Premium service offers improved bandwidth throughput and lower latency than is available using a "best effort" service. The key feature of Premium service is guaranteed bandwidth in specified increments ranging from 10Mbps up to 500Mbps, with the ability to burst up to the physical port speed. Delay-sensitive applications such as VoIP and video are supported through prioritizing.
